Patient ResourcesChronic Pelvic Pain

When It Isn’t Endometriosis

Chronic pelvic pain, a normal laparoscopy, and the four causes that no scan can show you. About a third of operations done to investigate pelvic pain find nothing. That is not the end of the search. It is the beginning of a different one.

The most common cause of pelvic pain in women whose surgery was normal is tender pelvic floor muscles — and there is nothing for a surgeon or a scanner to see. It is found by an examination in which someone presses on those muscles and asks whether it reproduces your pain. If that examination has never been done, it is the single most valuable thing to ask for.
